ABOUT ME

A junior at UC Berkeley majoring in data science and economics with an interest in business and public sector applications of analytics, I am someone who believes in data's potential to speak on the world's issues and phenomena.  While I enjoy the process of combining analysis and domain knowledge, what I’ve grown to appreciate is data’s ability to tell a story, whether about the world or ourselves .  Data is powerful.  It enables us to make choices, good and bad, and has the potential to liberate us from misinformation and poor decision making.  Ultimately, that’s what I love about data science; the ability to use tools and data as building blocks to reveal insights and tell a broader story.  Welcome to my site!

WORK

Seminar Course Instructor and Tutor
Berkeley Division of Data Science

I teach a 1 hour weekly course, Data Scholars, on data science concepts and provide support to 23 first generation and underrepresented students, in addition to leading 2 hours of small group tutoring.  I've spent this semester developing an entire curriculum from scratch that prepares students to succeed and exposes them to material beyond Data 8, such as industry standards, visualization, data ethics, and guest speakers.  I also took initiative and led a project to create an onboarding teaching document that addresses conceptual pain points and documents teaching techniques.

AUGUST 2017 - PRESENT

PublicEditor Visualization Team
Goodly Labs/Berkeley Institute of Data Science

Worked with Goodly Labs and the Berkeley Institute of Data Sciences on PublicEditor, a web-based platform that assesses the credibility of news articles to prevent the spread of misinformation and fake news. Used D3 and Javascript to visualize sub-category breakdowns of biases, fallacies, and other problems affecting article credibility.

JUNE 2018 - SEP 2018

Data Science Intern
knowledge.vc

Used NLTK and Sci-kit learn to build proof-of-concept ML content classifiers in a startup environment.  Developed VC oriented news classifier to aid investors in research of new technologies.  Gained fundamentals in machine learning, exposure to basic algorithms such as Naive Bayes and K-Means, and an introduction into web scraping.

JUNE 2017 - AUGUST 2017

EXTRACURRICULAR

Research and Publication Editor-in-Chief
Statistics Undergraduate Student Association

Leading a committee of students who are pursuing research projects or writing pieces on topics of personal interest.  Helping guide the research process, teaching both technical data manipulation/ visualization/ analysis skills and soft skills in writing and presentation.  Responsible for developing curriculum, handling logistics, and outreach to organizations in an effort to establish a data science project end-of-semester symposium.

MAY 2018 - PRESENT

Financial Vice President
Statistics Undergraduate Student Association

Communicated with the statistics department and student government to manage accounts.  Helped rebrand organization by proposing changes that keep the club relevant to the new data science program.  Improved the financial accountability of the club by raising standards of documentation.  Increased revenues, found new sources of funding and reallocated budget to spend budget more efficiently, while handling the budgetary constraints of a ~60% growth in membership, from 70 to 110 members.  Approximately tripled cash reserves and yearly budget, and increased club's access to venues and facilities.

MAY 2017- MAY 2018

External Vice President
Statistics Undergraduate Student Association

Took officer role as a mid-year replacement, maintained relationships in an unexpected transition period.  Improved relationship with advisors leading to better communication and more access to resources.  Expanded club partnerships with external companies like Sikka Software and Tribe Dynamics through recruitment info-sessions to provide opportunities for both club members and employers.

AWARDS

Datafest 2018 Best in Show
I was part of the winning team at the Datafest 2018 competition analyzing and cleaning an Indeed.com dataset.   We leveraged outside rent, income, unemployment rate datasets in addition to feature engineering metrics to measure job migration factors.  We found a correlation between income and rent levels with migration while also highlighting US job migration hotspots.
